For this particular assignment, I was assigned the responsibility of developing a book comprising two distinct texts: a macro text spanning 2500 words and a micro text encapsulating 150 words. Additionally, the project specifications necessitated the incorporation of innovative visual elements, including photographs, graphic motifs, and typographical techniques.
In response to this directive, I elected to spotlight a profoundly influential literary work from my formative years, "The Giving Tree" by Shel Silverstein. Collaboratively, with my mother contributing a reflective piece pertaining to the themes of "The Giving Tree" and the complexities inherent in parenthood, I curated a synthesis of diverse visual mediums and stylistic choices. The resultant creation, entitled "Branches of Love: A Mother's Tale of Giving and Taking," harmoniously integrates varying photographic styles, layout compositions, and graphic embellishments to present a poignant narrative.
TYPEFACE
As the macro text typeface, I have opted for Lust, known for its bold
display and festive glyphs, which infuse the text with a sense of vibrancy and fun. Complementing this choice,
Univers serves as the micro text
typeface, offering a restrained yet
elegant sans-serif option that
harmonizes with the ornamental
qualities of Lust, thereby ensuring a balanced typographic composition.
COLOR PALETTE
A strategic decision was made to introduce color, with each character designated a distinct hue to enhance visual distinction and narrative clarity. Notably, the light green hue was assigned to the tree, pink to the young girl, and purple to the narrator, thereby imbuing the visual narrative with purposeful differentiation and thematic resonance.
HALFTONE IMAGES
To make the images have a vintage
aesthetic and playful charm, I applied a black-and-white halftone effect using Adobe Photoshop. This editing technique not only contributed to the desired visual motif but also served to distinguish between the digitally rendered elements and the hand-drawn components, thereby enhancing the overall cohesiveness and artistic depth of the imagery.
TABLE OF CONTENTS
I divided the texts up into similar topics allowing for a short and organized table of contents. Paired with this, I included a short text about the book detailing the two texts and giving a little introduction to the book.
